Book Review: Milly-Molly-Mandy (MMM) are very sweet, short stories written for younger children. The plot takes place in 1920s, which reflects strong family values and innocent fun in ordinary day-to-day life. Each chapter or story is self-contained and only 8 to 10 pages long with one one-full page pencil sketch. Most adult could read aloud a story in about 5 minutes. This series is great for new readers ready for chapter books.

Edition Review: The 90th Edition from PAN MACMILLIAN is amazing! The books are printed in how the Author had done so originally, so no missing missing stories lost through the 6 book series unlike the MMM Storybook collections. This book is smaller, which is ideal for younger readers. This edition also has a pop of pink color on the pencil drawings that are usually MMM's stripes on her dress. I doubt this color was present in the first edition books in the 1920s due to cost, but I feel this adds a sweet element to the book without detracting from pictures. Examples can be seen in the "Look Inside" this book feature provided by Amazon. I would strongly recommend the individual books over general storybook collections.

My granddaughter loves these books. and if I found more I would get them for her.
This book is one of my favorites. Milly Molly Mandy lives in the small white cottage with the thatched roof with an array of adult relatives. The stories are a delight for young girls (and boys? One of the two best friends of the protagonist is a boy). Each chapter is a separate story--no cliffhangers at bedtime! Written in 19?12? (motorcars are a rarity) in a simple but always interesting and entertaining way, the stories show appreciation of small things--but are not overtly didactic. MMM is a favorite character and the catchphrases of the book still echo in my mind years after having (repeatedly) read these stories to my daughter. The book is well known in the UK; it was recommended to me there.
My six year old was happy to read this 4 in 1 book. Her older sisters who read only 2 of the stories in their childhood were jealous they missed out!
Growing up in Germany, I read these books by Brisley way back in the mid sixties. What I did not know was the fact that there are actually 4 Milly-Molly-Mandy books out there whereas they only translated two into German.
Recently I found out more about Joyce Lankester Brisley and ordered the missing books that I never could read.
It's like a time tunnel back to my own childhood...
I had never heard of Milly Molly Mandy until we read The MMM Storybook for our homeschool. MMM is a caring, industrious, polite little girl who spends her days helping others, caring for animals, planting seeds, and going to school. You'd think that would make for a really boring book, but the stories are not cloyingly sweet. My five year old son loves this book and so do I. My two year old daughter enjoys listening when I read it aloud but I'll plan on sitting down to actually read it to her when she's four or five.
I grew up in the 1980s and had never heard of these stories. However, I stumbled across a recommendation and decided to give it a whirl for my 5 and 7 year old daughters. We have not been disappointed! Each individual chapter-story is sweet and gentle... and just the right length for a bedtime story. The adventures have just *enough* to keep the young ones interested and entertained, with a solution at the end of each chapter (no staying up wondering what's to happen!). The stories are about simple village life and Milly-Molly-Mandy, a young girl who is clever and comes up with some unexpected solutions to her problems. What a treasure!
Growing up in Germany in the sixties, I read the German translation of two of the books (called "Milli-Molli") and absolutely loved them. The German illustrations are even more beautiful than the original illustrations, believe it or not.

Until recently, I never found out that what I had read was only a fraction of what Joyce Lankester Brisley had written, so when I discovered that there are at least 4 Milly-Molly-Mandy books (possibly even eight?), I ordered them at and with a delay of more than 4 decades enjoy now reading the series in it's entirety.
