The Wild Woman Guide to Traveling the World A Novel Kristin Rockaway 9781455597536 Books

The Wild Woman’s Guide to Traveling the World is an energetic, fresh read that combines the best aspects of romance, women’s fiction, and chick-lit. It’s the perfect kind of book to read on vacation, but better, because of the immersive quality of Kristin Rockaway’s writing and the transformations the characters go through, it’s the kind of book that will make you feel like you’ve been on vacation even if you don’t currently have the time or money to take one.

What I enjoyed most about this book is Kristin’s writing voice. Sometimes, voice is a hard thing to pinpoint, but when an author has it, you know, and here, it leaps off the page. Even if the main character, Sophie, was never physically described and no background was given, you’d still feel like you’d known her your whole life, just from the way she speaks externally, internally, what she observes, and how. Also relating to Sophie as the main character, I loved how the many ying-and-yang qualities of her personality made her so real and relatable. She’s confident yet scared. A planner but she’s free spirited.

My favorite books have unique settings, so Hong Kong as a setting really spoke to me. Hong Kong’s not a place that’s ever been on my travel bucket list, but in post-WWGTW hindsight, I think it’s because I didn’t know much about it and the language-factor was intimidating. But now that I have a taste of the views of Victoria Harbor from the Peak, shimmering views at night, steaming dim sum, pineapple buns with a coating of crystalized sugar for breakfast, a quick side trip Macau via ferry…consider Hong Kong added to my travel bucket list!

In short, this is a book where you can relax and enjoy being transported but also feel like you’ve learned some things by the time you finish (almost in a “Lean In” sort of way). Can’t wait for Kristin’s next book!

Did you every want to throw away your sensible job and life and follow some pretty boy (or girl)? Did you admire and also, perhaps, distrust those who did? Or did you actually do it and live to tell about it?

Either way, Sophie is for you. She's just practical enough to not be irritating and her love interest both delights and exasperates without overshadowing her story. Sophie feels very honest, and there's enough romance and chance to make it a real escape. Great read!
Yes!! I just love how Sophie is so vulernable & strong at the same time. And it's very female positive. Carson inspires her to see a part of herself that she's ignored but he's not some sappy "hero" or anything. Sophie is her own hero and that makes this book amazing. It gets better with each chapter, and by the half-way point, I could NOT put it down. The writing is so smooth and detailed that I felt like I was easily transported to Sophie's world.

A fun beach read or perfect for a train or plane ride. Can't wait to see more from Kristin Rockaway.
This was such a fun read, and really made me miss the traveling I did before I had kids. The protagonist is really relatable and honest, the story is fun... but what really made it enjoyable for me is how much it makes you want to jump on a plane and have an adventure. This is the perfect book for any trip - a honeymoon read, a beach read... even if you are on a commute this will help you pretend you are on your way somewhere else?! Just a really enjoyable novel.
If you're the type of person who looks at travel websites for fun (raising my hand!) you will definitely relate to Sophie and her dream of traveling the world. The only bad part of this novel is it will make you want to book an exotic vacation ASAP! I loved how Sophie learned to chase her dreams and find happiness, even though she started out as very practical and obsessed with a 5-year plan. An excellent debut!
What better way to read this book than on a plane? I started this on my way down to Florida and turned the last page as my return flight touched ground back home. This was such a fun romantic escape, and Sophie and Carson were wonderful travel companions. I loved their relationship, their chemistry, and how they played off each other to bring out each other's strengths. The settings were incredible, right down to the taste of the food. Their trek through Hong Kong made me want to hop on a plane myself. This book sucked me in and pulled me straight through. Loved.
Two chapters into this book, I thought I would be reading yet another Pleasant Romance - light, escapist, 3 stars, a perfectly okay story to return to.

And then something happened. I time-traveled to my twenties. I got transported back to the time I visited Hong Kong, to when I hated my high powered but stressful corporate job, to when I argued with my family, to when I argued with my partner. It’s a romance in which the romance is almost incidental, as if the main character had her own manic pixie dream guy.

I laughed, I cringed, I cheered. I loved it.
This novel offers a fun ride through New York and Hong Kong with romance, adventure and soul-searching. Our main character, Sophie, has achieved her childhood dream of traveling the world—or has she? While her stressful job in NYC allows her to travel, it’s dictated by the company and she spends far too much time and energy on work. She’d love to travel on her own terms, but how to achieve that?

Enter Carson, who is more than a typical fling. Like Sophie, he’s passionate about travel, but he’s also a free spirit and an artist with no big plans. Sophie falls briefly under his spell before real life beckons and she’s forced back to her job and her well-ordered but boring life.

I enjoyed the fact that Sophie is independent, and she decides to make big life changes on her own. Her new man inspires her, but she doesn’t go chasing after him. She’s the Manager and CEO of her own dreams and desires, and is a solid role model for any woman wondering where did my passion for life go? When and where did I lose my way? (And what the heck can I do about it?) It’s never too late!
